GrayMatter User Group Conference - Top of Mind

GRAYMATTER'S USER GROUP WRAP-UP

GrayMatter’s User Group Conference kicked off a full day of training sessions with a panel of industrial leaders from Smucker’s, CONSOL Energy, Bell and Fluor.

Each of the four GrayMatter customers is taking on an industrial modernization project in one of GrayMatter’s core four offerings: Industrial Cybersecurity, Advanced Industrial Analytics, Brilliant Operations and Automation & Controls.

We asked each panelist for their “best practice” when it comes to guiding their teams to take on a new technology or data visualization strategy.

Below is a summary of the projects and what they shared with the audience.

THE J.M. SMUCKER COMPANY

Smucker’s and GrayMatter are implementing a cybersecurity strategy designed to eliminate critical vulnerabilities and duplicate IP addresses.

“From a best practice standpoint, we had to basically go (away) from spreadsheet IP addressing on the shop floor. So, a lot of engineers work off spreadsheets and keep all their IPs on that spreadsheet. And so we wanted to digitize that and give visibility to others.” – Kevin Briggs, The J.M. Smucker Company

CONSOL ENERGY

CONSOL and GrayMatter are co-innovating on an advanced analytics project that creates digital twins of continuous mining machines, and uses the data to find efficiencies and cost savings.

“Make sure that we don’t use the data to beat people over the head and instead gamify the data, make them desire to have the data when it’s not there … and you get much greater buy-in and acceptance and just general use of the data when you approach it that way.” – Eric Shereda, CONSOL Energy

BELL

Bell has worked with GrayMatter on a number of process and cybersecurity projects. Currently, Bell is pioneering a digital factory and Manufacturing Technology Center.

“We get to do a lot of proof of concept, a lot of trial and error. And as we do that, then that gives us the information we need to to move forward and to say, OK, in our future factories, ‘these are products and technologies that you need.'” Steve Henson, Bell

FLUOR

GrayMatter and Fluor work to support mission-critical infrastructure and support legacy equipment that must operate 24/7.

“Redundancy and cyber focus is the biggest key for us. Making sure that our critical infrastructure is up 100% of the time, but also as we go along in the project, making sure that we’re cyber focused, because across the entire IC and I think for most manufacturing plants, cyber has become a big thing in the last couple of years with a lot of vulnerabilities that are out there. So just keeping that in mind as you go along with projects that you need to really focus on that, and ensure that your security is of utmost importance.” – Brandon Wyatt, Fluor
