ProjectX: GrayMatter Transforms Swimming Pool Management System for Florida County

Problem

A Florida county government agency responsible for managing public parks and recreational facilities faced significant challenges in monitoring and controlling its extensive network of public water parks. These parks, which feature water slides, dive pools and lazy rivers, rely on numerous pool-specific controllers to manage operations.

The agency was using controllers with limited web-based access, requiring operators to physically visit each pump house to monitor and adjust systems. This manual approach was inefficient, time-consuming and hindered the agency's ability to optimize operational efficiency across its facilities.

To address these challenges, the agency sought a comprehensive solution to achieve visibility of its pool control systems, enabling real-time monitoring and management from a central location.

Solution

GrayMatter worked to implement a SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) system to enhance the agency’s operational visibility and efficiency. The project was structured to ensure a successful transition to a modern monitoring solution.

PHASE ONE

Building the Network

The first step involved establishing a robust network infrastructure.

GrayMatter deployed a web-hosted SCADA software platform and installed an encrypted network connection on-site, ensuring secure connectivity to the existing controllers. This setup enabled the agency to begin visualizing data from various pool systems.

    PHASE TWO

    Developing Dashboards

With successful data connections established, the next phase focused on creating user-friendly SCADA screens tailored to the agency's operational needs.

The design emphasized high-performance graphics with minimal color use, allowing operators to quickly identify issues requiring attention. GrayMatter worked closely with the agency to review and refine these screens, ensuring that the final product aligned with user preferences and operational goals.

      PHASE THREE

      Going Live

Once the screens were developed and tested, GrayMatter prepared for the live deployment of the SCADA system. Training sessions were conducted to familiarize the agency's personnel with the new system, facilitating a smooth transition from the manual processes to the modern SCADA interface.

        PHASE FOUR

        Future Expansion and Support

Post-deployment, GrayMatter provided ongoing support, helping the agency to grasp the full potential of the SCADA system. As the agency recognized the operational benefits of SCADA, they began requesting proposals for additional enhancements, including instrumentation for chemical monitoring and integration of variable frequency drive (VFD) control systems.

Plans to extend the SCADA system to more parks were also discussed, reflecting the success of the initial implementation.

          BIG WINS

The successful implementation of the SCADA system transformed the county government agency's approach to pool management. By enabling centralized visibility into the operational status of multiple facilities, the agency significantly improved its efficiency.

Operators can now monitor real-time data from one location, reducing the need for manual checks and reducing response times to issues.

The agency reported increased confidence in its operational capabilities, leading to requests for additional features and site expansions. This project not only optimized current operations but also positioned the agency for future enhancements, highlighting the value of modernizing control systems in public service management.
