GrayMatter surveyed about 60 industrial and manufacturing leaders who attended our Thinkers and Doers Leadership Summits in Pittsburgh and Detroit in 2025. We asked them about the top challenges they face in operational technology environments.
Through in-person discussions, anonymous polling and follow-up, leaders explained how they try to balance modernization initiatives, budget constraints and workplace culture. Food & beverage, steel, energy, water/ wastewater, automotive, chemicals and building materials manufacturers make very different products, but we found that they encounter many of the same obstacles.
