Stay ahead of evolving threats to production.

GrayMatter’s OT cybersecurity services show you where your operation is exposed, close the gaps that matter most, and keep your defenses current as threats evolve. That is operational technology security built around how your plant runs.

Three ways to engage

Work gets done one of three ways, depending on your needs.

Cyber Assessment

Solves for:

When you’re unsure of your exposure

An assessment of your OT environment against the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, using about 125 questions distilled for OT.

Where this shows up

  • an auditor or regulator asking questions
  • a new threat advisory in your sector
  • an acquisition or ownership change

What we deliver

  • a scored baseline against the NIST Cybersecurity Framework
  • a gap analysis
  • a prioritized remediation roadmap
  • a business continuity plan

Program Acceleration

Solves for:

When you don’t have the resources to close known gaps

Hours-based access to GrayMatter engineers who do the hands-on work for your cyber lead, as needs arise.

Where this shows up

  • a cyber lead with a plan and no one to carry it out
  • a remediation roadmap stalled for lack of hands
  • security budget that sits at the plant, not with the person asking for it

What we deliver

  • network changes, from a DMZ between OT and IT to segmentation inside the OT network
  • detection deployed and tuned for your plant
  • documented backup and recovery programs
  • incident response tabletops and awareness programs

Managed Protection

Solves for:

When a program needs consistent, ongoing monitoring

Managed detection and response within Command24, our OT managed services, keeps the program running once detection is in place.

Where this shows up

  • detection in place, but no one watching it nights and weekends
  • a security program that has to keep running after the project ends
  • more coverage than your team can staff

What we deliver

  • daily monitoring of your detection tools, with alerts on threats, ransomware, and malware
  • network health monitoring that confirms every device is present and working as defined
  • ongoing assessment and remediation
  • coverage nights, weekends, and holidays

We step up to your biggest OT cybersecurity challenges

We provide the talent that helps you strengthen your security and solve your challenges.

In 2026, a joint advisory from US federal agencies warned that attackers were exploiting internet-connected PLCs across water, energy, and other critical infrastructure, in some cases altering what operators see on HMI and SCADA screens. A security posture that was enough when the plant was built may not be enough now. An assessment shows which of your controls still hold.

There are often oversight gaps in OT environments, and the budget that could fund an owner tends to sit at the plant, not with the person asking for it. GrayMatter can deploy continuous detection and monitoring through Command24 cyber managed services or ad hoc with our Cyber Acceleration Program.

It doesn’t matter how much “legacy” your legacy operating systems have. Chances are, we’ve seen it before. GrayMatter network engineers can provide segmentation that protects machines without patching them, avoiding more complex and expensive alternatives.

Are auditors or regulators asking questions? Are you concerned they will? We provide assessment maps to frameworks such as IEC 62443, NIST SP 800-82, NIS2 Directive and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and for utilities and pipelines, to NERC CIP and TSA security directives.

Where does your OT security program stand?

Every plant’s OT environment is a work in progress. It’s important to start with an honest look at where you stand.

We start by finding out which level you are on.

Schedule an assessment
  • LEVEL 1

    Status: Legacy, no internet.

Needs: Physical security, asset inventory, device hardening, patch management.

  • LEVEL 2

    Status: Internet-connected.

Needs: Boundary protection, backups, identity management, threat detection, basic redundancy.

  • LEVEL 3

    Status: OT and enterprise convergence.

Needs: Segmentation, centralized backups, zero trust, virtualization, application allow-listing, disaster recovery.

  • LEVEL 4

Status: High-availability OT and enterprise convergence.

Needs: High availability, CMDB, infrastructure monitoring, SIEM, incident management.

  • LEVEL 5

    Status: Threat-informed defense.

Needs: Deception, anomaly and breach detection, threat intelligence.

Industrial cybersecurity solutions across sectors

Industrial cybersecurity looks different in every industry, because the systems and the consequences do. GrayMatter has Thinkers+Doers in all of them.

Water and Wastewater

Pump stations, lift stations, and tanks sit unmanned across a service area, on networks IT security was never designed to cover. GrayMatter runs cybersecurity audits, hardens the network, and deploys OT threat detection built for distributed water and wastewater assets. The audits feed infrastructure roadmaps, so a compliance conversation ends in a plan.

Oil and Gas

Well pads, compressor stations, and pipeline segments spread across states, some running controls built before cybersecurity was a requirement. GrayMatter starts with what is in the field and brings every site to the same cybersecurity standard. After an ownership change, the work starts with finding out what the controls are running at all.

Aerospace and Defense

Custom-built machines run operating systems nobody can patch, and replacing them costs more than a program can spare. GrayMatter isolates them with network micro-segmentation, proven on one machine or network segment before it scales. The same approach covers plants running both commercial and military lines, and the supplier networks behind them. GrayMatter supports clients working toward NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC.

Discrete Manufacturing

Plants run by autonomous divisions secure themselves differently, and one compromised site can put on-time delivery at risk. GrayMatter assesses OT cybersecurity one site at a time and builds firewall protection plant by plant. Employee awareness programs make security a habit on the plant floor.

Data Centers

Security added after commissioning is harder, slower, and riskier than security designed in. On data center builds, GrayMatter engineers segmentation and Zero Trust for control systems into the controls architecture from the start, aligned to NIST CSF and IEC 62443. In operation the work continues with vulnerability detection and patch management, including in halls that cannot stop running for changes.

Life Sciences

In a regulated plant, every change to a system is a change to what an auditor sees, and a security control is a change like any other. OT cybersecurity work here is planned around the compliance record from the first conversation, so segmentation or a new detection tool arrives documented.

Food and Beverage

A batch in progress can’t be interrupted for a scan or a patch, and the data from check-weighers, ovens, and historians moves between systems never built to be exposed. OT cybersecurity here means detection and segmentation planned around the production schedule.

Transportation

Rail and locomotive remanufacturing floors mix new equipment with machines decades old, and the oldest can’t be patched. As legacy equipment gets sensors and connects to IT, the exposure grows with every connection. OT cybersecurity follows the modernization, with segmentation and monitoring for each machine that joins the network.

FAQs

IT security protects data and enterprise networks. OT security protects systems that cannot be patched, scanned, or restarted on demand. GrayMatter’s industrial cybersecurity work covers OT only, and we work beside your IT group.

We assess your environment against the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. You get a gap analysis, a remediation roadmap, and a business continuity plan.

We plan around production. Segmentation can start with a small group of machines and expand as it proves out.

After a detection tool is deployed, we monitor it daily and send alerts on threats, ransomware, and malware as part of our Command24 OT managed services offering. A separate network health service confirms that every device is present and working as defined. Both require a technology deployment first.

No. The Cyber Acceleration Program gives your people access to GrayMatter engineers to carry out the work as needed. Where no one leads yet, it gives you the people to start on an hour-by-hour basis.
