2018 Keynotes: Innovation Meets Industrial Operations
Peter Votruba-Drzal, Global Director for Mobility at PPG
Dr. Peter Votruba-Drzal is the Global Technical Director of Mobility.
Mobility is new team charged to look exclusively at how innovations in paint and coatings can help enable the new era of mobility technology including autonomous, electric vehicles and smart infrastructure. Dr. Votruba-Drzal also has responsibility for automotive coatings research at PPG’s Coatings Innovation Center for PPG.
He has been with PPG for thirteen years and has worked in a number of R&D functions including pretreatment, adhesives & sealants, electrocoat, and silica materials. He has also held the role as security platform manager within PPG Corporate Science and Technology.
In this role, he was responsible for the development and management of federally supported research in anti-terrorism/force protection. In addition to PPG, he has nine years of experience in academia, government, and consulting. Dr. Votruba-Drzal holds a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering.
PPG and the University of Michigan are partnering up to test coatings for autonomous vehicles. PPG is developing coatings to improve functionality and enable broad deployment of autonomous vehicles. Examples are an exterior that enhances vehicle visibility to radar and light detection and ranging, and easy-to-clean coatings to help prevent obstruction of sensors.
“Specialized coatings will play an integral role in the development of safe and reliable driverless vehicles,” said Gary Danowski, PPG vice president of automotive OEM coatings, in a statement. “We are enthusiastic about this partnership and are always actively seeking additional R&D partners as we continue to explore new possibilities in emerging vehicle technologies.” Read More.
