There’s a big difference between a Smart Building and a connected building.

Sure, you have access to a data stream about kilowatts consumed per hour, temperature and humidity fluctuations, HD surveillance video and maybe even the status of elevators, doors, and emergency systems. But what actions can you take with all that data to make a truly smart building — what we call buildingALIVE — that serves the evolving needs and schedules of the people who use it? There’s a lot of hype or buzzwords surrounding Smart Buildings lately – Big Data, edge computing, IIoT and Next-Gen Firewalls to name a few. Tom will answer the question, “What is a Smart Building” as well as delve into ways to turn your connected building into a smart building, and most importantly, how to do it securely. Tom has built a deep level of expertise in the smart building space. Most recently, he was a system design specialist at Penn State University, where he developed, managed and maintained PSU’s Building Automation Network, a sophisticated and secure system of 640 buildings in campuses across Pennsylvania.
